The Magic Carpathians Project "Ethnocore"
Regular readers meanwhile may remeber us recommending a few issues ago the
music of Poland's premier forest-dwellers and psychedelic folk-muse explorers
Atman. Sadly the band itself is no more, but its mainstays Marek Styczynski
and Anna Nacher have seamlessly woven themselves instead a combo named The
Magic Carpathians. With Anna's soaring, febrile vocals to the fore and an
aurally stunning array of multi-instrumentation and field recordings lending
atmosphere, the Carpathians create a distinctly European and yet universally
recognisable blend of sounds which are at once traditional and experimental.
Edgy yet strangely mellifluent, "Ethnocore" is a collection which
allows the msuic to grow and spread organically, from ethnic folk (the opening
of Ragana's Story) to free jazz ('One Mother') and most points betwixt and
between. For a fast-track Magic Carpathian learning curve incidentally, the
Oggum label have released a split 7" featuring the Magic Carparkers
on one side and the Welsh electronica-surrealists Nimbus 2000 (...).
